About This Quote

When the Soviet Union was founded in 1922, the government imposed a strict set of art guidelines on artists. These guidelines were enforced for over 40 years and influenced several generations of artists. In essence, the Soviet Union required that all art be an expression of socialist realism. Following the guidelines was considered a failure from the start.

In fact, failure was the only option. But even failure could be an expression of authenticity if it was properly executed within the context of socialist realism. A highly successful artist in the Soviet Union would be one who was able to create a work that would be deemed suitable with the socialist realist guidelines and then successfully implement that work into their art.

This is why Russia has always been known for its high level of visual art and has produced some of the best artists in world history.
